Adult Christian Education

In its ongoing commitment to education, First Presbyterian strongly invites and encourages adults to take advantage of the following educational opportunities.

9:30 to 10:30 a.m. - Adult Book/Video Discussion Class

Beginning September 14 - The Vincent Lounge group will be watching and discussing a DVD series called "Simply Enough." The series features Tony Campolo, a sociologist and social critic, and Shane Claiborne, co-founder of The Simple Way community in Philadelphia. Campolo and Claiborne represent different generations of evangelicals. If the word "evangelical" brings thoughts of James Dobson and others to your mind, you'll be in for a surprise! The DVD is an open and unscripted dialogue between Campolo and Claiborne on the foundations of the Christian life and voluntary simplicity. Topics include: lifestyle; food; celebrations stuff; money; and justice, among other topics. The producer lives in the Sioux City area, and we might get to spend a Sunday talking with him about making the DVD. We will spend 2-3 months in this series. You don't have to read anything ahead of the class, just come, enjoy, talk, listen, think, live. Come learn with us! For information, call Conrad Douglas at (712) 233-1822. The Adult Discussion Class meets in Vincent Lounge on the lower level.

9:30 to 10:30 a.m. - 101 Class

Beginning September 14 - This class, taught by Matthew in the Skinner Session Room, covers the basics of Christian faith and tradition. It is intended as an entry point for those new to the church, or to Christianity in general, and for those who want a refresher. For the next five weeks we will be discussing The Apostle's Creed. The book we are using is a 40-day devotional from the I Believe series published by Witherspoon Press, a ministry of the General Assembly Council of our denomination, the Presbyterian Church (USA). The introduction posits this question, "If a nonbeliever asked you what you believe, what would you say? A good place to start would be the Apostle's Creed." Use of this creed dates back to the early days of the church, and we will discuss how it is still operative in shaping our understanding of the faith into which Christians are baptized. The Adult Bible Study class meets in the Session Room on the lower level.

9:30 to 10:30 a.m. - Sunday Conversation

Beginning September 14 - Using materials from The Thoughtful Christian, this will be a weekly conversation hosted by Tim and Amy Hynds. Each topic is its own stand alone study and the class is designed for those looking for a place to get to know other church members while talking about their faith and how it fits into the rest of their lives.

5:30 to 7:30 p.m. - Wednesday Evening Activities

Starting September 17, 2008

5:30 p.m. - Evening Meal for all ages

6:15 p.m. - A variety of adult activities will be planned each month. Watch The Light for information about each month's activities.
