Following the defeat of the Scots at the Battle of Culloden, the British government attempted to suppress Highland culture. The wearing of tartan—distinctive patterns representing Scottish clans—was banned. In response, Scottish people found a quiet and faithful way to preserve their heritage. They would carry small pieces of tartan hidden on their person and bring them to church, where the cloth would be blessed. This act became known as the “Kirkin’” (blessing) of the tartans.
