Kirkin’ of the Tartans
A Celebration of Faith and Heritage
Sunday, April 26 at 10:30am
This beautiful tradition has its roots in Scottish history. Following the defeat of the Scots at the Battle of Culloden, the British government attempted to suppress Highland culture. The wearing of tartan—distinctive patterns representing Scottish clans—was banned. In response, Scottish people found a quiet and faithful way to preserve their heritage. They would carry small pieces of tartan hidden on their person and bring them to church, where the cloth would be blessed. This act became known as the “Kirkin’” (blessing) of the tartans.
Today, the Kirkin’ of the Tartans is celebrated in churches around the world as a way of honoring Scottish heritage and giving thanks for the faith that sustained generations through hardship. It is a reminder that our cultural identities and our spiritual lives are deeply connected—and that God’s grace is woven through every part of our story.
During this special service, we will recognize the significance of tartans, offer prayers of blessing, and celebrate the rich heritage that continues to shape our faith community.
We are especially delighted to welcome Yvonne Hazlett, who will be sharing her musical talents on the bagpipes, adding a powerful and traditional element to our worship.
You are encouraged to participate by wearing your family tartan, plaid, or any Scottish-inspired attire. Whether you have a direct connection to Scottish ancestry or simply appreciate the tradition, all are welcome to take part in this celebration.
