First Presbyterian Church has a long history of living out our faith through serving “the least of these” in downtown Sioux City and to the ends of the earth.

Presently we are engaged in two outreach programs which assist those who do not have the best opportunities in life. As a congregation we participate as well as give financial support to the Soup kitchen as this city endeavors to take care of the poor.

This congregation also has a great deal of energy around serving the students of Hunt Middle School. We collect clothing for these children throughout the year to provide them items that they would not normally have access to, but beyond that our efforts strengthen those children’s character as they able to attend school in clothing that doesn’t allow them to be a target for derision or bullying.

We are also a congregation that supports the Presbyterian Camp at Lake Okoboji. Our financial support along with the hands on work we do each spring helps the camp maintain well-groomed cabins so that others can attend camps and conferences to deeper their faith journey.

Our ministry has extended beyond Sioux City to our partnership with Presbyterian communities in Mexico and Haiti. Over the years, scores of our members have gone on mission trips to these communities to serve in places worlds away from Sioux City, and to be transformed by the experience.

First Presbyterian Church offers countless opportunities to make a significant difference in the world and see the difference such service can make in your own life. We challenge you to join us in our mission and benevolence.

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY

Our mission is to meet once a month, except during summer, for fellowship, knitting or crocheting prayer shawls for members of the church, their family, or the community, as requested by those in the church who know of someone who is in poor health or in need of the warmth and comfort of a prayer shawl. We also have shawls available for church members getting married. All recipients and donors names are recorded in a book that is stored with the supply of shawls.

As we are working on a shawl, we ask God to provide healing and comfort to the person and pray for God’s love to surround and support the recipient as the shawl has become a mantle of love. We have expanded to making caps, scarves and mittens for needful children in the Sioux City schools. Anyone in the church who can do basic beginner’s knitting or crocheting is welcome to join our group for fun conversation, sharing of your talents, and help with that stitch that’s giving you trouble(!).

For more info, please give Martie Ebner a call at 605-232-4773.

If you know of someone who needs a prayer shawl, please call Anne Cowley at 712-204-5182, who will help you choose from the supply of shawls.
